Study: Service-dog training linked to cellular signs of slowed aging in female veterans

Researchers report that female veterans who trained service dogs for eight weeks showed increased telomere length — a biological marker associated with reduced cellular aging — compared with a control group that showed declines.

Female veterans who trained service dogs over eight weeks experienced increases in telomere length — a biological marker tied to slowed cellular aging — while a control group showed decreases, according to a study led by Florida Atlantic University.

The finding, recently published in the journal Behavioral Sciences, suggests that this structured, animal-assisted intervention produced measurable changes at the cellular level in the study sample and may offer a non-pharmacological option to support the health of female veterans with PTSD. In addition to the cellular benefits reported in this study, prior research in humans has associated pet ownership with better cardiovascular health and quality of life, although these findings are not specific to this particular group of veterans.

Florida Atlantic University led the research in collaboration with the University of Maryland School of Nursing, the Medical College of Georgia and the non-profit Warrior Canine Connection. The study compared female veterans who trained dogs with a control group over the eight-week period of the study and measured telomere length before and after the intervention. Training animals as part of structured programs, especially dogs, has been associated in some studies with mental health benefits such as reduced PTSD symptoms and improved social connection, although evidence is still emerging and effects can vary by program.

Cheryl Krause-Parello, a researcher at Florida Atlantic University, said, “Female veterans face unique reintegration challenges that are often overlooked, and traditional PTSD treatments don’t always meet their needs.” She added, “This research underscores the power of service dog training as a meaningful, non-pharmacological intervention to support the health and healing of female veterans with PTSD.” About 7% of veterans experience PTSD at some point in their lives, compared to around 6% of the general U.S. population, highlighting the need for effective interventions.

Investigators reported that participants in the training group showed an increase in telomere length over the study period, while the control group experienced a decrease. The team framed the biological change as consistent with reduced cellular wear associated with prolonged stress, a critical issue since high levels of stress hormones can exacerbate mental health challenges.

In explaining the appeal of animal-assisted approaches, Krause-Parello said, “Nontraditional approaches like connecting with animals can offer meaningful support.” The researcher emphasized the intervention’s potential for veterans whose needs are not fully addressed by conventional treatments. This aligns with the overall trend suggesting that structured activities can improve mental health by lowering stress hormones and increasing calming neurochemicals.

The study’s publication in Behavioral Sciences places its results in a peer-reviewed context; reporting on the work appeared in The Palm Beach Post, which covered the research and its implications for female veterans and service-dog programs.

Beyond the clinical measurements, the reporting noted human moments that illustrate the bond between people and dogs. Earlier this month, an 86-year-old woman who fell while walking was helped by her son’s dog, Eeyore; the animal left her side and led an Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Deputy straight to the moderately injured woman. That episode was cited alongside the study as an example of how dogs can play practical and emotional roles in communities.

The research team included academic and nonprofit partners that specialize in veteran services and canine training, and their collaboration reflects growing interest in structured programs that pair veterans with dogs for training and rehabilitation. The authors position their results as evidence that such programs can affect more than mood or behavior — they can register on biological markers associated with aging and stress, presenting a compelling case for expanding such initiatives.

Researchers and advocacy groups interested in expanding animal-assisted programs for veterans may use these findings to inform pilot projects and funding priorities, as the work suggests measurable physiological benefits from training and caregiving activities. The potential improvements in mental and physical health outcomes point to a promising direction for veteran support systems.

As the authors and collaborators continue to explore how best to support female veterans, the study establishes a starting point for larger trials and long-term follow-up to determine how durable the observed telomere changes may be and how they relate to clinical outcomes, providing a strong foundation for further research in this vital area.
