Researchers at Eötvös Loránd University report that head shape, body size and owner treatment together influence the behaviour of short‑nosed dog breeds, based on questionnaire data from about 5,000 animals. This specific head shape, known as brachycephalic, is strongly linked to various health challenges, including breathing difficulties, eye and skin diseases, heat intolerance, and an increased risk of conditions like brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS).
The findings, published in the journal Animals, examined common traits among short‑nosed dogs — including French Bulldogs and Pugs — and argue that a mix of anatomy and rearing practices helps explain differences in trainability and social responses. The study also notes that these breeds are often prone to health complications, which can further impact their overall well-being.
