Rescue dog Wiley wakes mother and daughter from RV fire in West Palm Beach

A rescue dog named Wiley awakened his owners and alerted them to an RV fire in West Palm Beach, Fla., enabling the pair to escape unhurt as fire reduced the vehicle to charred wood and melted wiring.

A rescue dog named Wiley woke his owners and alerted them to a blaze that consumed their recreational vehicle in West Palm Beach, Fla., allowing the two people inside to escape without injury, the family and local officials said.

The fire broke out while mother Joi Roberts and her daughter, Heather Belliveau, were asleep in the RV, according to interviews with the family and local reporting. Roberts credited Wiley with sounding the alarm: “There was smoke, and she said, ‘Mom, the RV’s on fire,’ and we were in shock. We didn’t really know what to do,” Roberts told WPTV reporter Michael Hoffman.

Belliveau said Wiley’s timing was decisive. “If it would have been 30 seconds later, I don’t know that we would have been able to get my mom out because the place was engulfed with smoke at that point,” she said. Neighbors and emergency responders arrived as the occupants exited; by the time crews had the scene under control, much of the vehicle was badly damaged.

“Charred wood and melted wiring is all that’s left of the RV,” Roberts summarized when describing the wreckage. She emphasized that personal safety mattered more than material loss: “That’s all just stuff. That can all be replaced. Um, my daughter can’t be replaced. Her dogs can’t be replaced.”

Local organizations moved quickly to offer support. Ginger’s Pet Food Pantry, a nonprofit serving pet owners in the area, donated treats, toys and beds to help Wiley and the family recover from the ordeal, according to the organization’s online information. The family said they were grateful for the community response as they focused on recovery and on care for Wiley following the fire.

Fire officials have not publicly attributed a specific cause for this RV blaze, but investigators and fire-safety experts note common causes of RV fires. RV fires commonly originate from electrical systems (41%), cooking equipment (12%), and heating equipment (9%), per NFPA data. Electrical shorts from loose connections and mechanical problems such as dragging brakes are among frequent contributors cited by authorities in similar incidents.

Wiley’s role in this episode highlights a broader set of functions rescue animals perform in emergencies. Beyond waking owners, search-and-rescue dogs detect trapped survivors under rubble in disasters such as earthquakes and avalanches, locate missing persons and operate in hazardous areas where human teams may be slower or less effective. Officials say trained dogs can significantly shorten the time it takes to find people in perilous conditions.

Dog owners who want to cultivate alerting behaviors can teach a specific action—such as a nose nudge, paw lift or bringing an object—using positive reinforcement. in low-distraction environments, rewarding the dog for the chosen behavior and then pairing it with antecedent cues such as subtle movement, noises or scent changes so the dog learns to associate those signals with the alerting response.

Roberts described the night as miraculous. “I can’t explain it other than it’s just another miracle. I think we had an evening of miracles, a night of miracles,” she said.
