Westlake Ace Hardware and KC Pet Project have unveiled “Barks & Rec,” the Kansas City metropolitan area’s first outdoor playground built exclusively for adoptable shelter dogs. The facility, created, donated and constructed by Westlake Ace Hardware in partnership with KC Pet Project, is designed to give animals a supervised outdoor space for exercise, exploration and enrichment while they await adoption.
KC Pet Project officials say the playground will expand the shelter’s routine offerings with structured time outside the kennel environment. The layout includes steps, platforms and ramps intended to mimic natural obstacles and encourage climbing, sniffing and problem-solving — activities staff say provide both mental stimulation and physical activity. Shelter leaders plan to fold the playground into daily schedules and use it as a setting for positive agility training to help dogs build confidence.
“Shelters can be stressful places, especially for high-energy dogs. We want to do everything we can to make their short time with us at KC Pet Project feel more like summer camp and thanks to Westlake Ace Hardware, our new Barks & Rec Playground embodies that philosophy,” said Kate Meghji, CEO of KC Pet Project.
Westlake Ace Hardware’s involvement included design, materials and labor. “At Westlake Ace Hardware, we believe in supporting the communities we serve, and KC Pet Project represents the very best of Kansas City. We’re proud to donate the playground and are excited to see the joy it will bring to so many pets waiting for their forever homes,” said Alicia Weber, senior marketing director at Westlake Ace Hardware.
KC Pet Project staff emphasized the playground’s role in behavioral enrichment and public presentation. The shelter said controlled outdoor activity and positive training can help reduce stress-related behaviors, expose dogs to new surfaces and challenges, and allow staff and volunteers to document and share more dynamic footage of animals with potential adopters. How do outdoor playgrounds for shelter dogs impact adoption rates?
There is limited direct research on whether outdoor playgrounds built exclusively for shelter dogs increase adoption rates. Based on available information, there is no specific published research isolating the impact of dog-specific outdoor playgrounds on adoption rates, although there is broader research on how enrichment and kennel environment can affect shelter dog welfare and adoptability. National shelter data indicate that a majority of dogs entering U.S. shelters are adopted each year, and shelters often cite such data when planning enrichment programs intended to support welfare and adoption readiness.
KC Pet Project and Westlake Ace also framed the project as an example of effective ways for communities to support local animal shelters. Communities can support local animal shelters through multiple effective approaches: adopting pets rather than purchasing from pet stores, volunteering time for community outreach and animal care, making financial donations or donating supplies and equipment, fostering homeless animals to free up shelter space, and helping with transport and events. Shelter officials said partnerships that provide physical infrastructure or volunteer labor are especially valuable because they expand what staff can offer without adding long-term operating costs.
The opening was highlighted in local announcements and covered by industry publication Hardware Retailing. KC Pet Project did not release a specific opening date in the announcement, but described the playground as immediately available for supervised use by dogs in the shelter’s care. The organizations said they will monitor the new space, document how animals respond, and consider expanding the program if it proves effective at enhancing animal welfare and adoption readiness.
By combining supervised outdoor play with targeted training, KC Pet Project and Westlake Ace Hardware say Barks & Rec aims to improve dogs’ day-to-day experiences in the shelter and present them more confidently to prospective adopters, while giving the community a tangible way to support homeless animals.
