A multinational study identified three cognitive traits — curiosity, focus, and inhibitory control — that distinguish 11 rare “label‑learner” dogs, researchers said.
The finding matters because label‑learner dogs demonstrated a consistent way of interacting with objects after hearing their names: owners in the United Kingdom, United States, Switzerland, Netherlands, and Germany carried out standardized cognitive tests at home and recorded how their dogs responded. These tests are part of a broader spectrum of assessments used to measure dog intelligence, including problem-solving, memory, and learning tasks.
The researchers employed a methodology that included object-label learning tests, where dogs were asked to select the correct object from various options after hearing its name. This approach revealed clear behavioral differences between the label‑learner group and control animals.
Researchers from the University of Portsmouth and Friedrich Schiller University of Jena designed the project as a set of owner‑administered cognitive tasks. Dogs identified as label‑learners spent significantly more time examining novel objects and returned to look at them more often than the comparison dogs, showing a targeted focus on specific items rather than random exploration, a trait often linked to better trainability across different breeds.
Dr. Juliane Kaminski of the University of Portsmouth said, “Being able to pick out such a wide variety of objects is not something any dog can do. It is extremely rare and appears to be an inherent natural ability which is specific to the dog and not a quality that many dogs have.” This cognitive proficiency aligns with findings that suggest certain cognitive traits can correlate with training success and problem-solving ability across breeds.
The research team tested dogs by having owners present multiple objects, say an object’s name, and record whether the dog selected the named item. Label‑learner dogs repeatedly demonstrated both prolonged inspection of new objects and a pattern of returning gaze and attention that set them apart from matched control dogs. Interestingly, surveys indicate that many dog owners perceive their pets as intelligent, underscoring the subjective nature of assessing canine cognition.
Dr. Juliane Bräuer of the DogStudies Unit in Jena highlighted the role of self-control in the behavior her team observed. “I am not so surprised that inhibition plays a role here. My own dog, who is not a label learner, always struggled to inhibit her preferences when solving problems. She likes a ball so much that she would not fetch a ring when a ball is present,” Dr. Bräuer said, linking the trait of inhibitory control to success in the naming tasks. This speaks to how certain cognitive traits can vary widely among breeds, with cooperative working breeds frequently exhibiting stronger social cognition.
The study collected cases from five countries and ultimately identified 11 dogs that met the researchers’ criteria for label learning; those animals formed the core comparison group. Tests were filmed by owners to ensure standardized administration and to allow the research team to analyze behavior across subjects and sites.
The findings, published in November, were described in reporting by Country Living Magazine, which summarized the three distinguishing traits and the citizen-science approach that enabled the cross-country study.
The investigators said further work is planned to examine how these traits arise. “We will be carrying out further research as we must explore whether these traits are part of the make‑up of some individual dogs from the puppy stage, or whether they develop over time and can be influenced by training,” Dr. Juliane Kaminski said, underlining the team’s intent to track whether curiosity, focus, and inhibition are innate or shaped by experience.
By linking observable patterns of inspection, attention, and self-control to success in object‑label tasks, the study provides a behavioral profile that research teams can use when searching for and characterizing rare label‑learning dogs. The authors reported that the group was small but distinct, and that the behavioral markers emerged consistently across the international sample.
