Study of 50,000 dogs finds owner demographics shape what pets are fed

A study of more than 40,000 companion dogs across the United States finds owner demographics help explain what people feed their pets.

Researchers at Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences examined how factors such as owner age, lifestyle and the dog’s role shape feeding choices, arguing that looking only at dog-level traits misses a larger influence. The findings come from analyses of dogs enrolled through DAP, which signs up companion animals for research projects aimed at studying aging and improving canine health.

Katie Tolbert, an associate professor in Texas A&M’s Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences, said the research shows a missing piece in many nutrition studies. “Sometimes we do studies related to dog demographic factors like breed, size and age that we think influence the diets that owners feed their dogs. But if we don’t consider the owner’s demographic factors, we might not be looking at a complete picture,” she said. This insight is particularly relevant as the demographics of pet ownership continue to change, with younger owners increasingly demanding premium, organic, and functional pet foods that provide specific health benefits for their pets.

The team reported that older pets are more often fed canned or home-cooked diets, a pattern the researchers link to the demographics and perceptions of their owners. “For example, we found that older pets are more likely than younger animals to be fed a canned or home-cooked diet,” Tolbert said, highlighting the study’s central result. This aligns with trends showing that a significant number of dog owners are making dietary changes based on their pets’ age and health needs.

The study also identified associations beyond owner age. Highly active dogs, working animals and dogs living in rural environments were more likely to be fed home-prepared raw or cooked diets, a detail the authors highlight when considering how lifestyle and environment drive feeding decisions. Dog owners can find authoritative resources to better educate themselves on canine nutrition, such as the World Small Animal Veterinary Association’s “Savvy Dog Owner’s Guide to Nutrition on the Internet,” which assists in evaluating online nutrition information.

Those patterns matter for veterinarians and researchers who evaluate pet health and nutrition. Tolbert framed the project’s motivation plainly: “The point of this study was to show that we need to consider information about both the dog and their owner when assessing why a dog is fed a particular diet.” Incorporating owner demographics, she said, can sharpen interpretations of why owners choose certain foods and how those choices relate to health outcomes. A striking statistic mentioned in the research indicates that 16% of owners who changed their pets’ diets cited health conditions as a primary reason for doing so.

The work builds on recruitment efforts by DAP, which enrolls companion dogs from a wide range of backgrounds for long-term projects studying the effects of aging on canine health. The scale of the dataset allowed the researchers to compare feeding patterns across ages, activity levels and living environments.
