Emaciated pug mix named Sprout rescued during West Bridgewater traffic stop; owner to face cruelty charge

During a Nov. 24 traffic stop in West Bridgewater, police found an emaciated 1-year-old pug mix named Sprout. The dog, who weighed just 6 pounds, is recuperating at the Animal Protection Center of Southeastern Massachusetts while the 27-year-old owner faces a cruelty charge.

Authorities and animal welfare workers said Sprout’s condition illustrates common signs of animal neglect the public should recognize.

Animal cruelty in the United States is widespread but significantly underreported, with major animal welfare organizations noting that the shocking number of cases seen by authorities each day represents only a small fraction of actual incidents.

Shelter staff also pointed to community resources for pet owners who may be struggling to provide for animals.

The Animal Protection Center and West Bridgewater police urge anyone with information related to the case or with concerns about animal welfare to contact local authorities or area shelters.
