Scooby, a dog kept chained outdoors for 12 years, has been surrendered to rescuers in northern Portugal and is now living in a loving home.
The surrender followed an 18-month campaign by volunteers who repeatedly requested the animal’s release; rescuers described Scooby as emaciated, his skin raw and bleeding from severe mange and burdened by a massive tumor. The single dog survived on the occasional meal of dried fish bones and, despite his condition, greeted helpers with a wagging tail.
Local animal welfare groups, working with Lady Freethinker and the campaign organisation Unchained Dog Rescue, coordinated efforts that led to Scooby’s transfer from his guardians to a place of care. Volunteers persisted for a year and a half before the surrender took place, an emotional turning point for the animal and those who had pressed for his removal.
Rescuers reported that Scooby’s physical state reflected prolonged neglect: emaciation, widespread mange producing raw, bleeding skin, and a large tumor that added to his burden. Those who handled his intake emphasized the dog’s resilience; despite years in chains, he was described as joyful and friendly after being removed.
After arrival in care, Scooby received immediate attention for his skin condition and the tumor that had gone untreated while he lived outdoors. Veterinary and foster arrangements were made to stabilise him and provide continuing treatment; within a short period in his new environment he began to show more typical dog behaviour and social responsiveness.
The campaign that culminated in Scooby’s surrender included persistent outreach to his guardians and public awareness actions by participating groups. Rescued dog finds freedom after 12 years in chains, and information about the campaign is available on the organisation’s website.
Unchained Dog Rescue played a collaborative role in the effort to secure Scooby’s safety and subsequent placement. Reporting on the rescue and the organisations involved is available from local animal welfare coverage in the region. 12 Years in Chains – Now Scooby Runs Free Thanks to …
Now described as safe in a loving home, Scooby is receiving care and rehabilitation aimed at helping him recover from the physical toll of years in restraint. Observers noted his tail remains frequently in motion — a small but vivid sign of recovery after prolonged hardship.
Where things stand now: Scooby is under the supervision of his rescuers and foster carers as he continues treatment and rehabilitation toward long-term recovery and a stable, secure life.
