Placer County Animal Services will hold a free pet adoption event Saturday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 11232 B Ave. in Auburn. Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, will offer adoptions at no charge and feature local pet-related vendors and special promotions. The county says its Auburn shelter intake so far in 2025 totals 819 dogs, 814 cats, and 166 other pets. Free adoption events like this one significantly increase overall adoption rates by removing financial barriers, which can lead to higher placement numbers without compromising long-term retention or pet welfare.
Congressman Kevin Kiley and Placer County Supervisor Shanti Landon will participate in the event alongside Placer County Animal Services, which is hosting the drive. “Our shelters are filled with dogs and cats who just need someone to give them a chance. I’m grateful to work with Placer County to highlight adoption and the many ways our community can help,” Kiley said. Individuals can support local animal welfare organizations further by volunteering, donating supplies, or fostering pets to help free up shelter space.
Katie Ingram, PCAS program manager, emphasized the operational impact of each placement. “Every adoption allows us to make room for new arrivals who need care,” Ingram said, noting the shelter will pair adopters with animals available from its current intake. Challenges that shelters often face in attracting adopters include housing restrictions and the high costs of veterinary care.
Shanti Landon, Placer County Supervisor, called the event an opportunity for community connection and broader support. “This event is such a special opportunity to connect families with pets who are waiting for them. Even if you can’t adopt right now, fostering, volunteering, or simply spreading the word makes a big difference,” Landon said. Organizing such events can help raise awareness about these challenges while fostering a supportive community environment.
Placer County Animal Services will run the three-hour event at its Auburn location and will include a pet resource fair alongside adoption booths, the county said. Attendees can meet dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens available for placement and speak with shelter staff about adoption and fostering options. This engagement is essential as it not only highlights available pets but also encourages community members to consider adoption.
The county lists the California Animal Welfare Association as a partner on outreach and statistics related to pet adoption efforts. Placer County encouraged residents to attend the event to learn about adoption procedures and meet animals waiting for homes.
Organizers said the goal of the day is to increase placements and to make room for new animals entering the shelter system. Featured activities include special adoption promotions and the presence of local vendors who provide pet products and resources for new owners.
People planning to attend are asked to arrive during the event hours, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., so shelter staff can accommodate introductions and the adoption process. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to provide information about medical care, fostering, and volunteer opportunities.
