A house fire in Pierson destroyed a single residence and killed a 69-year-old man and two household dogs after flames were reported around 8:30 a.m., local authorities said.
Volusia County Fire Rescue units were dispatched to a home on North Shell Harbor Road in Pierson after a call for a structure fire came in at about 8:30 a.m., officials said. Firefighters arrived on scene and immediately began suppression efforts to bring the blaze under control. Crews ultimately extinguished the fire, but the structure was destroyed by flames, smoke and heat, according to incident summaries released by responding agencies.
First responders located the male occupant inside the home during or shortly after fire suppression operations. The man, identified by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office in preliminary on-scene reports as 69 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two dogs that were inside the residence also were killed by the fire; the sheriff’s office confirmed the total number of animal fatalities as two.
