Macon Topic Raphael Woolfork died after being attacked by three pit bull-type dogs at about 9:20 a.m. Saturday while walking in Oglethorpe, Ga., police said. The attack left witnesses shaken and prompted a search for the animals that remained at large into the afternoon.

Oglethorpe Police Department officials said officers were at the scene quickly after the call and remained active in the neighborhood as the department led the response and launched an investigation. Police described the animals involved as pit bull-type; authorities asked anyone with information to contact local law enforcement.

Witnesses recounted a chaotic and traumatic scene near where Woolfork was walking. “I heard them barking. But I didn’t see any dogs,” said Jessica McKellar, who works at a nearby gas station and lives in the area. She said bystanders rushed to help as the attack unfolded and called it “a horrific scene as someone tried to help Woolfork.”

McKellar described efforts by residents to move the victim to safety, saying the dogs interfered as people attempted to put Woolfork into a vehicle. “When they were trying to put him in the car, and the dogs were like pulling him, like pulling him back,” she said. Her account, along with police statements, formed the initial timeline investigators are using as they piece together the events leading up to the attack.

What are the statistics on dog attacks in the United States? The incident has revived broader questions about dog-related fatalities and how communities respond. Fatal dog attacks in the United States typically account for on the order of several dozen deaths per year; one analysis of CDC WONDER data found an average of about 43 deaths annually from 2011 to 2021, but year‑to‑year numbers fluctuate and long‑term trends in fatality rates are not clearly established.

Public discussion often centers on both owner responsibility and legal approaches to dogs labeled as dangerous. What steps can dog owners take to ensure their pets do not pose a danger to others? Dog owners can reduce the risk their pets pose to others by obeying leash laws and not allowing dogs to roam, supervising and not chaining or isolating them, and avoiding exposing them to situations that trigger fear or aggression, such as unfamiliar crowds or threatening approaches. Many regions also use breed-specific legislation (BSL) to ban or restrict dogs labeled as “dangerous,” through outright bans, special licensing, mandatory muzzling, or insurance requirements.

How do different regions regulate breeds that are considered dangerous or aggressive? Locally, residents expressed concern for their own safety in the wake of the attack. McKellar said the episode left her shaken and worried about her child. Neighbors reported seeing increased police presence as officers canvassed the area, interviewed witnesses and sought any leads that could locate the three animals.

Police have not released additional identifying details about the dogs beyond describing them as pit bull-type, nor have they provided information about ownership. The department asked anyone who may have video, photos, or other information — including the time and direction in which the animals fled — to come forward to assist investigators.

The Oglethorpe Police Department continued to investigate Saturday, and city officials reiterated their sympathies to the victim’s family and friends as the community processed the fatal attack. Further updates are expected from local law enforcement as the search progresses and more information becomes available.
