Hailing from Tibet, the Lhasa Apso was originally bred as a watchdog in palaces and monasteries. Thanks to their history, they are a large dog in a small body. This is an extremely loyal and protective breed. Though rarely aggressive, the Lhasa Apso is weary of strangers and takes their guard dog duties seriously. The Lhasa Apso is an intelligent and independent breed. They have a distinctive ability to reason and can even be a bit manipulative. Early and consistent training will help, though. Their lively and joyful personality makes them slow to mature. They are full of energy and love to play, but can get impatient with children so early socialization is necessary. With the right training and socialization, the Lhasa Apso will make a lifelong companion.
