Mobile pet adoption unit will unveil its new mobile adoption unit during the City of Gainesville’s Christmas on Green Street parade Sunday at 4 p.m., bringing the shelter’s 53 animals into the community ahead of the holiday season. Shelter officials say they hope the mobile pet adoption unit will increase adoptions by bringing animals directly into high-traffic community locations and special events, reaching potential adopters who might not visit shelters on their own.

The custom-built, 24-foot trailer was funded by Petco Love and is designed to operate as an off-site adoption space for the shelter at community events and outreach locations. Shelter managers say the unit is meant to expand visibility for animals available for adoption and to make adoption logistics easier during festivals and other gatherings.

The trailer’s interior is stainless-steel and includes a built-in generator for heating and air conditioning, running water and a drainage system for easy cleanup, and an adoption window that opens from the outside, officials said. The vehicle will be decorated and lit for the parade as part of Sunday’s festivities.

“We look forward to Christmas on Green Street each year, but this year is especially exciting for us, because we are decorating our new mobile adoption unit and lighting it up for all to see,” said Stephanie Maloch, Manager of the Hall County Animal Shelter. “We are extremely grateful for our partnership with Petco Love.”

As the shelter provides a platform for adoptions, they express hope that this innovative approach can help further decrease euthanasia rates at the facility. The shelter, located at 1688 Barber Road, Gainesville, will present the unit in the parade route as a visible way to connect residents with animals available for adoption. The unveiling coincides with the shelter’s broader outreach calendar and community events supported by local and national partners. How do mobile pet adoption units impact the number of adoptions in local communities.

Petco Love provided the funding for the trailer, while the Bissell Pet Foundation is sponsoring an “Empty the Shelter” event connected to local adoption initiatives, according to shelter materials. Those partnerships are intended to support transport, staffing and promotional costs that help shelters place animals in new homes. Individuals can also support local animal shelters by volunteering their time for tasks like dog walking, fostering, or donating supplies.

Staff at the Hall County Animal Shelter plan to use the mobile unit for routine off-site adoption events as well as for special occasions. The trailer’s features — climate control, plumbing and an exterior adoption window — are intended to allow shelter staff to safely and comfortably show animals to potential adopters outside the kennel environment.

Shelter leaders say the mobile adoption unit will be part of a stepped effort to increase on-the-ground outreach and to introduce more residents to animals in need of homes. The first public appearance will give paradegoers a close look at how the unit functions and how the shelter plans to use it going forward. Presently, a majority of the shelter’s animals are adopted, which shelter leaders say underscores the importance of outreach efforts in finding homes for dogs and cats.

Local residents who wish to visit the Hall County Animal Shelter in person can find the facility at its Barber Road address in Gainesville; shelter staff will also be available at the parade when the unit is unveiled Sunday at 4 p.m. The Bissell Pet Foundation’s sponsorship of related adoption events will continue through scheduled adoption drives organized by the shelter.

Source materials and additional reporting about the unveiling are available from WSB-TV, which covered the shelter’s announcement and the unit’s features.
