Easily identifiable by its unique shape of short legs and long back, the Dachshund is a deceivingly temperamental dog. Though fiercely loyal and affectionate to its owners, the breed can be intolerant of strangers, other dogs and children, although it gets high marks for its usefulness as a watchdog. It is classified as the smallest dog in the hound category, but can range up to 32 pounds or under 11 pounds for a miniature. Although intelligent, these willful dogs can be difficult to house train, and their barking manners should be closely checked. Despite some of these detriments, the breed is beloved by many, primarily for its distinct looks, devotion to their owners and fun-loving personality.
