Timothy A. Mousseau, a biological sciences professor at the University of South Carolina, addressed the viral theories directly. “Despite the social media hype, the blue dogs of [Chernobyl] do not reflect any kind of mutation or evolutionary adaptation to radiation but rather are the result of the dogs’ unsanitary behavior,” he said. He further emphasized that while long-term exposure to radiation can affect animal populations in contaminated areas, resulting in increased mutation rates and immune abnormalities, this was not the case for these dogs.
