Firefighters rescued more than a dozen dogs, including several puppies, and two people were taken to the hospital after a house fire at 80th Avenue and Krameria Street in Adams County just after 7 a.m. Monday, officials said.
Crews from South Adams County Fire and Adams County Fire Rescue arrived to find smoke and flames pouring from the single-family home, according to incident reports. Personnel from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene, helping secure the area and coordinate the response as firefighters advanced hose lines and conducted searches.
Responders reported heavy smoke and visible flames on arrival and immediately began a primary search of the structure for any occupants. Firefighters prioritized both people and animals during search-and-rescue efforts, quickly removing multiple dogs from the interior as crews worked to bring the blaze under control.
Emergency medical personnel treated occupants and animals at the scene. Two people were evaluated by medics and later transported to the hospital for further care, authorities said. Several dogs that showed signs of smoke inhalation were given oxygen on site; crews placed masks over animals’ muzzles and administered oxygen before moving the animals to safer areas outside the property. Despite rescue attempts, officials said some animals did not survive the fire.
Fire personnel described a coordinated effort in the early-morning response. While one team focused on extinguishing active flames and protecting exposures, other crews conducted room-to-room searches and removed pets found inside. After removal, firefighters and emergency responders staged animals in a safer zone near the street while decisions were made about transport and veterinary care.
Local news outlets provided additional on-the-ground accounts of the rescue. Reporting noted the presence of puppies among the animals removed from the home and described responders working to stabilize animals before transferring them into the care of animal-welfare partners. Community members and local responders subsequently coordinated arrangements for veterinary treatment and temporary shelter for the surviving animals, officials said.
South Adams County Fire and Adams County Fire Rescue led firefighting operations at the scene with assistance from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, which maintained scene control and supported logistics. Agencies remained on scene after the blaze was knocked down to secure the property, conduct overhaul operations to check for remaining hot spots, and support investigators.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire investigators were conducting a systematic review of the scene to determine the origin and sequence of events that led to the blaze, officials said, and no determination has been announced.
Authorities emphasized that the response unfolded rapidly in the pre-dawn hours and involved multiple agencies working together to extinguish the fire, remove occupants and animals from harm’s way, and coordinate follow-up care for those affected. The investigation into the origin of the fire is ongoing, and officials said they will release additional information when it becomes available.
News organizations covering the incident noted the emotional nature of the response as firefighters and medical personnel worked to triage injured animals and transport people to hospitals. The community and local animal-care groups have been engaged in assisting with sheltering and veterinary needs for the surviving animals as follow-up arrangements continue.
