Fifteen dogs were taken into custody after several animals ran at large and injured three people just after 10 a.m. Saturday in Sedgwick County.

The attack occurred in the 4600 block of South Hemlock in the Oaklawn neighborhood and involved a sheriff’s deputy, an 18-year-old man and a 69-year-old woman, officials said. The incident left the deputy with minor injuries, while the 18-year-old was transported to a Wichita hospital and the 69-year-old sought treatment in a private vehicle.
Deputies from the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene shortly after the call and encountered multiple dogs running loose in the neighborhood. Sedgwick County EMS transported the 18-year-old to hospital care, and Sedgwick County Animal Control took custody of the animals and has assumed the lead on the ongoing investigation.
Branden Stitt, spokesman, described the animals to reporters: “Deputies found 10 to 15 dogs, believed to be Boston terriers, running at large.” The dogs were described in official accounts as Boston terriers and were removed from the property by Animal Control for assessment and care.
Emergency personnel and law enforcement focused first on securing the scene and ensuring further injuries did not occur. Medical attention was provided on site to the deputy and other victims before the 18-year-old was taken to the Wichita hospital by Sedgwick County EMS.
Officials said the 69-year-old drove herself for treatment. The sheriff’s deputy involved was identified only by role in official statements and was reported to have sustained only minor injuries.
Sedgwick County Animal Control is leading the investigation into how the dogs came to be running at large and the circumstances that led to the attack. The agency also has responsibility for determining the animals’ immediate care and any subsequent disposition.
Local coverage of the incident is available from the Wichita Eagle, which reported on the three injured parties and the response by county agencies. The county agencies involved continue to coordinate on the field response, medical care and animal custody.
Authorities have not attached additional names to the injured in the statements released by county offices. The immediate priorities described by responding agencies were securing the animals, treating the injured and documenting the incident for any follow-up actions.
As of the latest county statements, the dogs remain in custody with Sedgwick County Animal Control while the agency completes its investigation and evaluates animal health and behavior. The sheriff’s office and animal control will determine any next steps based on that assessment.
