It's written in an easy-to-understand way but still has the expert knowledge to help any new owner successfully raise their Rhodesian Ridgeback from puppy to old-age. This big and powerful hound is an odd mixture of traits, mostly good. Bred to tease and distract lions on the African plains while hunters did their work, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is sometimes called the African Lion Hound. The breed’s distinctive feature is the “mohawk” that runs along its back, created by hairs running counter to the rest of the coat. As with many hounds, this breed retains a high level of chase instinct and can be difficult to train to be off-leash. Extremely loyal to its family, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is a great dog for families with kids, though its size (at about 100 pounds) requires adult monitoring to assure safety for all.
