This richly colored hound dog is loyal and affectionate, and although he’s a great companion, prospective owners need to be situated just right for him. The Redbone Coonhound needs a lot of room to run and hunt, as its instincts to track are fully loaded. Also be prepared for a couple of long walks a day, and early training to try and control the breed’s trademark howl, which can carry for miles and has been known to start a neighborly disagreement or two. Unfortunately, the Redbone also carries the ancestral tendency for a musky smell. Despite the drawbacks, this beautiful and intelligent dog is quite a pleasant family addition who, if trained correctly, will provide lots of good humor and affection.
