The Presa Canario needs a warning: Not for owners looking for an easy dog. This large breed weighs between 88 – 110 pounds or more, and has a temperament that isn’t forgiving. The Presa Canario is first and foremost a guard dog that is territorial and has a strong instinct to chase and kill prey, which it considers small animals including cats and small dogs. If you’re considering this breed, do a lot of research and be ready to commit to intense training so you can keep yourself and those around you safe. Presa Canarios require moderate exercise and a sturdy six-foot fence; an invisible fence is never OK for these dogs – they will chase prey with little regard for the zap.
