This ancient breed comes from Egypt, where he was a legendary sight hound bred to chase rabbits. He retains his strong instinct to hunt by sight, so be aware that his independent streak will have him finding food on his own, whether it’s from your kitchen countertop or the creatures in the backyard. This tendency to hunt also comes out in his dislike of boundaries – the Pharaoh Hound needs an eight-foot fence to keep him contained, and also a digging impediment. Don’t even consider an invisible fence, he’ll blow right past it. Affectionate and friendly, this breed needs to be taught proper barking manners, but as long as he’s well exercised, he’ll be a lovely companion for families, including older children.
