The Otterhound originated from England, and is often used as a hunting dog there. The AKC recognizes it as part of the hound group. They are considered an endangered breed, with only about 600 Otterhounds in existence. Initially bred for otter hunting, hunters decided to cease this practice since the animals were not breeding quickly enough. This, in turn, affected how many otterhounds were being bred for the sport. They are very inquisitive and must be kept a close eye on, since their nose can often lead them to different places. This breed has a unique bass voice. These dogs do face some health issues, including epilepsy. They usually live up to ten years.
