The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is also commonly called a troller, and is the smallest of all retrievers. These dogs have a lot of energy, and need to be played with and exercised often. They originally come from Nova Scotia, and have been used to hunt waterfowl. These dogs are loving with children and affectionate with their families. Many people have reported success in using them as search and rescue dogs. Care should be taken to make sure they have proper socialization early on; households that have a cat present should introduce the two while the dog is still a puppy, to avoid any problems in the future.
