Used for hunting moose, elk, and even bear, the Norwegian Elkhound originated from Norway, just as its name would suggest. These dogs form a strong bond with their owners and are very loyal. They make excellent watchdogs and having a natural drive to work. Although generally healthy, these dogs can gain weight without much prodding, so care must be taken to not overfeed them. They live at least 12 years, although many have extended lifespans. A few health issues may include hip dysplasia and cysts. Perhaps the most famous Norwegian Elkhound was President Herbert Hoover’s pet Weejie, although this breed has been used in TV and literature as well.
