The Leonberger is originally from Germany and is a cross between the Newfoundland, the Saint Bernard, and the Great Pyrenees. Though large and intimidating looking, the Leonberger is actually a family-oriented breed. Their size, deep bark, and lion-like looks make them a wonderful watchdog, though. Leonbergers need early training and socialization. Without that, they tend to be mischievous or destructive. Leonbergers get along well with other dogs as well as other species like cats and horses. They do not do well around small children due to their massive size but will get along well with them while supervised. The Leonberger is an energetic breed and does need quite a bit of exercise and their need to be around people makes them prime candidates for separation anxiety. However, the Leonberger does make a lovely and loyal companion.
