Though the Flat-Coated Retriever may look similar to a black or brown Golden Retriever, they are actually quite different. The Flat-Coated Retriever was bred to retrieve game on both land and water. They are a hard-working and loving breed. They are extremely friendly and tolerant, getting along well with both children and other dogs. The Flat-Coated Retriever is sometimes referred to as the “Peter Pan” of dogs as they take a while to mature – often remaining puppy-like well into their adolescence. Because of this, they may be difficult to train so consistent and early training is necessary. Flat-Coated Retriever’s are very active and need adequate exercise but thanks to their lively and exuberant personality, they make great family companions.
