Amiable and smart, the English Setter is a hunting breed that specializes in pointing. The smallest of the three Setters, this dog will weigh between 45 and 80 pounds. Owners interested in the English Setter should be able and willing to provide plenty of exercise, as the dogs love to run and need it to stave off destructive behavior. Once sufficiently exercised, it will plop down beside you for a nice rest. Highly trainable, the English Setter is a remarkable hunting partner and can excel in agility and obedience sports, as well as make a lovely therapy dog. Grooming can be a bit of grind, so be ready to commit to frequent brushing to remove mats and tangles from its longer coat.
