The Dalmatian is a favorite among dog enthusiasts for its distinct black-and-white spotted coat and its goofy, engaging personality. Bred as a service dog to run alongside coaches and offer protection from bandits, the Dalmatian has a nearly insatiable appetite for marathon-like running. This is a coveted trait for highly active owners, but it (and the high levels of shedding) can be a deal-breaker for families who were ill-matched with the breed. A dog who likes to perform—and be recognized for its efforts—the Dalmatian needs tons of exercise, lots of space and an owner willing to spend time engaging its mind and body. These dogs love their packs, so be sure to include it in your home and family.
