The Cur Dog is a bit of a catch-all for a distinct-looking American dog that has a short-haired, tannish coat and a blackened muzzle—think Old Yeller from the heart wrenching 1957 Disney film. This dog is a uniquely American breed that came to be on the Western front and mountainous backwoods via a variety of breeds who accomplished important tasks for its owners, hunting in particular. Typically on the larger side, the Cur Dog possesses all the traits you’d desire from a four-legged friend, such as loyalty, alertness, intelligence and trainability. Happiest when its genes are put to work, this breed will impress on the hunting grounds and be an amiable companion at home.
