A dog of mysterious origins, the Coton de Tulear is said to be the ancestor of a dog stranded on the African island of Madagascar by shipwreck. Supposedly, this lucky survivor mated with the local population and produced the fluffy, cuddly small dog we call the Coton de Tulear. Despite its humble beginnings, the breed now enjoys a life of luxury, often being a lap dog (weighing in at 9 – 15 pounds) who receives doting care from its people. Its trademark wispy hair does require frequent brushing (think 20 minutes a few times a week), but it sheds little. Its personality is spot-on for a companion dog, with traits such as being affectionate, cuddly and playful at the top of its calling card.
